DIY DOC’S: DESIGN BUTLER

In DIY Docs, we take a look at how illustrators, artists and designers put their stamp on Dr. Martens shoes. Painting, tattooing or de-constructing – we’re giving them the creative freedom to express themselves off of the canvas.

Meet our next DIY Docs artist, multidisciplinary artist Butler, who has customised our White Kiev Backpack. Find out more about his art and what he stands for below:

Introduce yourself:
I’m Butler, I am a fine artist and all round creative person. I also work as Tinie Tempah’s art director.

Who or what do you take inspiration from?
As a kid I enjoyed a lot of comic books & cartoons. I think the urge to create came from seeing quite a lot of graphics and I felt the need to regurgitate it. The grown up version of me takes inspiration from Jony Ives & Elon Musk, they’re both visionaries when it comes to the technological advancements we have today.

Do you have an illustration or project you’re most proud of?
I’m extremely proud of everything I put out there for public view. Recently, its been the “Replica” exhibition series. This is a set of 6 painted portraits, sculpture and miniature drawings which I’ve presented in different spaces across London, and its been received pretty well. I also have my 5th solo exhibition coming up in February 2017 – I’m really looking forward to this!

Talk us through your customised Dr. Martens, was it a challenge working on the bag?
Most of my work has always been about de-constructing a subject and putting it back together with the basic of elements, whilst keeping the beauty of that subject intact and that reflects in the illustration on the back of the backpack. The artwork being on back where it’ll be rarely seen unless the wearer takes it off was a conscious decision. It keeps the backpack still clean and simple with a hidden surprise, its kind of like having a secret tattoo.

Do you listen to music whilst you work?
Yes I do! Recently, I have Travis Scott’s latest album titled ‘Birds In Trap Sing McKnight’ on repeat.

If you could have any super-power, what would it be?
The ability to teleport. I’d save a lot on travel.

If you could draw anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
Morgan Freeman, I think I will get around to that someday.

Tell us your favourite thing about the city you live in:
My favourite thing about London is that there’s so much competition especially in the creative field; everyone wants to be the best at what to do. The city really keeps you on your toes with the amount of talent it has, it’s mind-blowing. I’ll suggest All Press Cafe in Dalston on a Sunday morning as a place to definitely check out, thank me later.

Tell us about your first pair of Dr. Martens:
I never wore a pair of Dr. Martens until recently. I got a pair of DM’s Lite Newton boots and I was very surprised on how comfortable they are.

And finally, what do you stand for?
Recently, I learnt the lesson of doing things at your own pace – especially creatively. In this age of high consumerism via social media, its very tempting to put out work that doesn’t match your own standards for the sake of “staying relevant”. Take your time and make sure its right.
Work hard and stay humble, but also make sure you know what you’re worth. Otherwise you’ll get taken advantage of or treated less than you deserve.
