DR. MARTENS SPEAKS TO MONICO BLONDE

As they release their new music video for ‘Bad Thoughts’, we caught up with Cardiff-based indie-pop band Monico Blonde to talk inspiration, future plans for the band and what they stand for…

For those who don’t know Monico Blonde, how would you sum yourselves up in a sentence?
We put the catchiest hooks with the harshest sounds and try to make magic.

Can you talk us through the inspiration behind your new single ‘Bad Thoughts’?
The summer’s over. 2016’s been pretty rough so far, so we wanted to record something that had that edge. It’s not a depressing song, but it’s not sugar pop either.
Along with producer Gethin Pearson (JAWS, The Enemy, Clay) we worked to get the synths and guitars sounding quite offensive, and then stick it with a big singalong chorus. It just made it sound massive.

Do you remember your first pair of Dr. Martens?
We recently played an in-store session at Dr. Martens Cardiff Store, and we each got a pair there. Not really taken them off since – apart from showering. Unless, can you wear them in the shower?

List three tracks you’re listening to right now:
“Dusseldorf” by Teleman – New single from Teleman is awesome.
“Dean Town” by Vulfpeck – Totally instrumental and it’s the coolest thing you’ll ever hear.
“Life Itself” by Glass Animals – Opening track from Glass Animals’ new album, sounds huge and love the samples they use on the new material.

What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
Cardiff’s got a great live music scene. Crowds can get pretty messy and that’s what we love. We’ve got a gig in an antiques warehouse coming up and it’s going to be a mad one. Those are the ones you remember.

What are you most excited for about the year ahead?
Getting this single out on the road. We spent most of our summer in the studio. Now we’ve been getting our stuff out there and everything’s got this buzz around it. We’re going to play any city, town or service station that’ll have us; just to get the songs to as many people as possible.

And finally, what do you stand for?
Playing a show that people look back on and say “I was there”.
