New York’s freshest new hip-hop act Oxymorrons are playing a free show at our Dr. Martens Brooklyn store on Thursday 6th October, debuting songs from their hot new EP ‘Complex But Basic‘. We caught up with the boys from Queens to discuss their unique sound, relationship with Docs, and what they stand for.

The Oxymorrons will be playing a free show in Dr. Martens Brooklyn store on Thursday 6th October.

How did the Oxymorrons come together?
We (co-vocalists Kami and Demi) founded the group in Queens. Drummer Matty Mays was added shortly after. Matty was an intern at a management company we were on. We later added Guitarist Adam November, who went to NYU with Matty and Bassist Joe Jordan. We met Joe playing AfroPunk Music Festival in Brooklyn.

Some people describe your sound as OutKast meets Rage Against the Machine, how would you describe it?
Actually that “ OutKast meets Rage Against the Machine” description comes from us. It’s awesome to see that description is being spread. We get tons of comparisons, from Kid Cudi, Blink-182, N.E.R.D, Nirvana etc. We are beyond humbled and flattered to be even compared to these awesome artists.

You’re about to release your first EP, ‘Complex But Basic’, where did the title come from?
The name of the EP comes from the dualities of life and our band. Life and music are extremely complex. We take the complexities of life, blend them with various musical genres and deliver them in a very relatable way. Its also an “oxymoron” so it plays off of the name.

List three tracks that you are listening to right now:
1. Through the Late Night – Travis Scott
2. Numbers – Skepta Featuring Pharrell Williams

Tell us about your first pair of Dr. Martens…
(Demi) My first pair of Dr. Martens were the Union Jack 8-Eye Boot, I got them a few years ago at the Dr. Marten store on Newbury St in Boston, MA. I still have them. They are my favourite pair of boots, they’re so durable. I’ve raged on stage, walked through rain and snowstorms, and they are still here looking great.

And finally, what do you stand for?
We stand for creative freedom and self-libration. We want people to 1000% accept who they are and unapologetically be themselves. Do what you love, and spread love to others.
