IN MY DOC’S: APRIL

Dr. Martens has a rebellious history often associated with free-thinkers, creatives and different subcultures. This is not only true of the Dr. Martens customer, but also our hard-working family of staff. They are our brand ambassadors that embody the DMs way of life. Keep following the blog as we highlight our staff and contributors from across the globe and celebrate their achievements and style.

Meet April, our Senior Accessories Designer in our Camden Office. We found out more about her life in London and what she stands for:

Introduce yourself:
Hi I’m April Taylor, I’m the senior accessories designer working with the team at Camden, I’m originally from Leeds and have been working as a designer in London for 11 years, happy to say I still have a booming Yorkshire accent.
When I’m not eating, drinking and dreaming about Dr Martens I spend most of my time out and about with friends and my two furry babies Bunny and Ted (my huskies).
I love ska, northern soul and anything cheesy from the 80’s and 90’s; love Belinda Carlisle.

What Dr. Martens product are your wearing in your photo:
I’m wearing my Adrian Tassel loafers which I love and they now feel like slippers, although I do want a double sole pair to disguise the fact I’m a shorty.

Tell us about your first Dr. Martens:
My first pair of docs were 1460’s from a shop in Leeds, they were black and I was at college in the 90’s thinking I was grunge, wearing my dad’s old shirt and unflattering jeans.

How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix between Goth, granny and oversized school kid. My favourite piece of clothing is my Granddads old cardigan from C&A in the 70’s; 100% acrylic with a lary jacquard pattern. Sounds bad but its timeless. My style icon is Noel Fielding – I love his mish-mash approach to style and got to love a man in make up hey.

Three tracks you’re listening to right now:
1. Cindy Lauper – Sally’s Pigeons
2. Duran Duran – Hungry Like A Wolf (my dog sings along to this)
3. Mike Oldfield – Moon Light Shadow

What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
My favourite place to dance and hang out in London is Dalston, where I live. The jazz bar on Bradbury street is my favourite place; lovely people, great live jazz music, open till late and its crawling distance from my place.
I’ve lived in Dalston for two years but have live in various places over the 11 years.

If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would love to meet Paul O’Grady and hang out with him and the dogs at Battersea, and have some drinks after too. I would ask him to dress up as Lilly Savage and host me a big party.

What are your top three picks this season?
1. The double sole Holly shoe and Molly boot; I’ve been waiting for these for almost a year, can’t wait to get some height back in my life.
2. The 11″ Marble leather satchel; I love the patent leather and the print is really on trend at the minute – will go perfectly with my black dress with white collar.
3. The 1460 vintage in black; always a timeless classic – I’d wear them with anything.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I’d own a flying horse.

And finally, what do you stand for?
My mantra is the Yorkshire man’s motto, or another one that would have to be censored; Opinions are like “bottoms” everyone has one.
I believe in what you see is what you get.
