ONE BOOT THREE WAYS: SEATTLE EDITION

Our Seattle crew knows Pacific Northwest style: layers are key, thrift shops and army surplus stores are your friends, and textures and patterns are made for mixing. That’s a recipe for a wildly diverse fashion scene. The one common thread? From look to look, Seattle style is typically anchored by a pair of Doc’s.

So how does the Rigal — an ultra-lightweight, athletic-inspired Dr Martens 8-eye boot — measure up? Very well. We asked Marley, Zoë and Tina from our Seattle store to show us how they rock the Rigal. The results ranged from personal art and tomboy classics to functional femme fatale — read on for the details.

MARLEY

How would you describe your style in general?
My style is inspired by everything, I want to make it my personal art. I love playing with colors and textures. I am a photographer so I like thinking about the outfit compositionally. I try to match colors to make the amount of details less overwhelming.

How do the Rigals fit with your style?
I wanted something that looked like nothing I had. These still feel like all my go to 8-eye boots but the white sole gives the shoe more dimension and personality. I am a big fan of dancing and I like to buy shoes that will catch people’s attention, the white sole brings the eyes and my moves make them stay.

How did you style your Rigals?
I just wanted to be matchy-matchy like normal. So I tried to keep the shades and colors as close together as I could. Lady Krishna painted the eye on my shoe at her art event at our store. She only had enough time to do one shoe because so many people want her to paint their shoes. The eye is unique to my shoe, which I love to show off. So I wanted to bring the colors as far up my body as I could, including using those extra laces.

TINA

How would you describe your style in general?
I would describe my current style as a functional femme fatale. I love expressing my femininity with colors and patterns, but I also like the idea of serious collars and structured non- binary silhouettes that add a professional touch in even the most casual looks. Collared dresses and Dr. Martens make for the perfect work outfits!

How did you style your Rigals?
I styled my Rigals with one of my favorite vintage dresses, fishnets, mink hat, and staple leopard coat. I often go from work directly to all sorts of functions; whether they be a concert, drag show, or art event. Seattle in the winter can be unpredictable at times, so it’s important for me to be able to peel away layers and not feel weighed down. I love mixing vintage with modern touches, and the Rigals not only keep my look up to date, but they help keep my ankles supported while not feeling too heavy.

What do you like most about the Rigal Boots?
I often fall into a “same boot, different day” rut, and to change things up I throw these into the mix. They are unlike anything I’ve ever owned before, but are still just as durable as any of my other Dr. Martens shoes. I really enjoy the built in arch support, soft leather, and the fact that I can wear these boots with practically everything I own.

ZOE

How would you describe your style in general?
My style has a lot to do with fit. I love simple, clean lines, things I can wear every day. My style is very queer, it’s like 50’s mechanic dreamboy but also city sharp. I love work-wear, I’ve never met a sale rack at Army Surplus I didn’t like.  I’m actually a pretty lazy dresser, I like things I can wear from home to work to going out.

How do the Rigals fit with your style?
I’ll admit, I’m a die-hard boot fan. Shiny leather and breaking in new boots are totally my thing. I got the Rigals because I wanted something that was as versatile and clean as the originals, I also wanted to switch it up. The Rigals are perfect because they match with so much of my wardrobe, I can just throw them on and run out of the house.

How did you style your Rigals?
I chose the Rigals because they fit in with my other staple tomboy classics: my favorite vintage jean jacket with a fitted button up and classic black jeans. My style is tragically-Seattle, which usually means wearing very dark colors always. I like that the Rigals have clean, simple lines, and that they feel lightweight and streamlined. My life is so chaotic and busy, I basically need shoes that can keep up with me.

  • What are the lighter soles made out of? I have a pair of Newtons (which have the lighter soul) and every time I wear them I get shocked and electrocuted by any switch or plug I touch. I also shock other people and it hurts very badly. Only happens when wearing the Newtons though, never in my classic docs or other shoes.

    • Hello Shea, thank you for your interest. The Newton boots has a Phylon midsole, and a slimline rubber outsole. We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing troubles. Please email contact@drmartens.com and our customer services team can offer more assistance. Thank you.
