We’re celebrating our birthday at Dr. Martens this year by highlighting creative individuals across the world who are originals in their own fields; whether that be art, music, or fashion. Dr. Martens Originals styles have become iconic over time, worn by authentic characters who embody rebellious self-expression. In these interviews, we recognise the creative individuals who inspire us, and find out who they are and what they stand for.
Today we speak to Guennam-OK, Korean graphic designer about his proudest achievements, and relationship with Doc’s.
My name is Guenam and I’m currently operating the design studio I founded called ‘Palindrome’. Before that, I spent 10 years directing the streetwear brand known as ‘Buried Alive’ in Korea’s ‘Human Tree’ district and have worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and art director.
Tell us about your relationship with Dr. Martens:
I was heavily influenced by punk in my teenage years, and while I was in a punk-rock band I met Dr. Martens for the first time. I received a lot of inspiration from both Dr. Martens and punk-rock culture, and that is how I came to be as I currently am.
Can you explain to us more about your graphic design/ art?
I’ve placed importance on directly drawing things with my hands but recently I also work a lot with sculptures I can shape directly. It is my overall goal to use my pieces to create various experiences for many people without strict regards to the shape of the sculptures.
Do you have a project you’re most proud of?
I produced kinetic art sculptures for an exhibition. They were sculptures that moved on their own through electricity. It was my first time working in that way, so it was difficult, but even still, getting to create new things with new methods was quite enjoyable.
What is your favourite thing about the city you live in?
If you consider Seoul as a steak, it would be a rare steak. The outside might seem cooked but the inside is raw. This is the kind of city Seoul is.
Do you listen to music when you work? List three tracks you love:
These days I listen primarily to music without lyrics. This is because if I listen to songs with lyrics when I have a lot on my mind, I can’t focus. The music I listen to a lot these days includes:
1. Clams Casino – I’m The Devil
2. Homeshake – Every Single Thing
3. Jamie xx – Gosh
And finally, what do you stand for?
Actually, I’m not really a person that lives by a motto or saying, but I would usually think ‘Be faithful to the present’.
