We’re celebrating our birthday at Dr. Martens this year by highlighting creative individuals across the world who are originals in their own fields; whether that be art, music, or fashion. Dr. Martens Originals styles have become iconic over time, worn by authentic characters who embody rebellious self-expression. In these interviews, we recognise the creative individuals who inspire us, and find out who they are and what they stand for.
Today we speak to Ryan De La Cruz, London-based musician about paying homage to his African roots, and more…
Where are you from and what do you do?
I’m an artist from East London. I sing, rap, write songs and also play multiple instruments; Tha Geetarr, Bass, Drums.
Who and what influences your sound?
I listen to a range of different styles of music. I listen to a lot of Soul music, RnB, Old school 70s – but I also love rap music. In all honesty my roots influences my sound majorly! My parents are from Congo and from time to time I like to pay homage and incorporate my African side in my music.
You started 2017 with the release of your video to ‘Know About Me’, can you talk us through the inspiration?
The inspiration for the ‘Know About Me’ video actually stemmed from the song. When Bouha (Bouha Kazmi – director) heard the song for the first time he thought there were multiple people in the song, only to realize it was all me (LOL)! So he came back to me with a treatment, the story fit so perfectly with the song. We spent an afternoon figuring out how we would portray all the different characters and so forth… we spent about three weekends shooting and KNOW ABOUT ME was ready!
What are you most excited about for the year ahead?
I’m working on my next project already, along with some more videos. I’m putting on an exclusive listening party soon before I drop it, but I’m buzzing for The Great Escape Festival in Brighton in May also.
What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
I must say, I love London’s Fashion. There’s so much variation of different styles people wear every single day.
What are the three tracks you can’t get enough of?
1. Gyalchester – Drake
2. Blem – Drake
3. 16 Shots – Stefflon Don
What’s your relationship with Dr. Martens?
Dr. Martens are really cool; they always go with the attirek, you don’t even have to try. I currently have 6 pairs and I doubt it will stop there… I’m really looking forward to working together.
And finally, what do you stand for?
I stand for love, I stand for equality, I stand for youth for excellence; I stand for goodness. I stand for peace. We all need to believe in order to be free.
