We tasked Irish art duo Adrian+Shane to create a one-of-a-kind piece for our new Dublin store. The painting, entitled ‘Sole of The City’, is now on permanent display in Dr. Martens, Duke Street, Dublin. Read on to discover more about the guys behind the art…
Tell us a bit about yourselves:
We are Adrian+Shane. Two artists who have been working as one since 1998. We make paintings, prints and photographs and we exhibit and sell them worldwide. We are from Drogheda, Ireland’s largest town. It’s not too far from Dublin.
Looking for inspiration for this piece, we examined our own Dr. Martens boots and realised when we turned them up-side-down that the sole looks like a map of the city. This formed the basis of the piece.
Who/what did you take inspiration from for your ‘Sole of The City’ piece?
We started off by fusing two ideas together: the energy of Dublin city along with the iconic Dr. Martens boot. Looking for inspiration for this piece, we examined our own Dr Martens boots and realised when we turned them up-side-down that the sole looks like a map of the city. This formed the basis of the piece.
Dublin has so many well known landmarks that we were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing which ones to include. Featured in the finished artwork you’ll find: Liberty Hall, The Convention Centre, Poolbeg Towers, Ha’penny Bridge, GPO, Luas, The Spire, Bórd Gáis Energy Theatre and Molly Malone.

Do you listen to music while you work? What are the three tracks you have on repeat right now?
Adrian: Yes. We always have music playing in the studio when we work. I love all sorts of music depending on my mood.
It’s difficult to pick just three tracks. But here goes …
If you could draw/meet anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
What do you love most about the city you live in?
Adrian: I love wandering through the city, visiting art galleries and people watching.
Shane: The people and also the city is full of really great independent cafés and bars.
Do you remember your first pair of Dr. Martens?
Adrian: Yes. I got a great pair of black Dr. Martens boots for my 16th birthday. I loved them. They lasted for years.
Shane: I do remember them. I think I was 18. I wore them till they could no longer be worn.
And finally, what do you stand for?
Being the best that we can be and making the most of life.
