Meet Edinburgh born and bred Callum Beattie, who’s just released his new single and video ‘Man Behind The Sun‘. Callum Beattie found his feet by blagging himself pub gigs around Edinburgh and sneaking backstage at festivals to give out his demo to music execs. Long gone are the days of pushing trolleys at Tesco and using his high-vis vest disguise himself as festival staff (which led to run-ins with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs and R.E.M). We spoke to Callum to get the lowdown on whats going on in his world. Read more below…

For those who don’t know Callum Beattie, how would you sum yourself up in a sentence?

Scotch chancer grafting a life writing anthemic tunes and strumming guitars.

Can you talk us through the inspiration behind your new single ‘Man Behind The Sun’?

Yeah I wrote the song about my own insecurities really. It’s about me thinking someone I loved had run off with someone on holiday.  Essentially the ‘Man Behind The Sun‘.

Tell us about your first Dr. Martens.

My old man had a cupboard in the house with literally hundreds of LPs. One of the bands I found in that cupboard was The Clash. I idolised Joe Strummer for a while and wanted to be him. To achieve that I had to start with a good boot. Pair of Doc’s.

Three tracks you’re listening to right now.

Nothing But Thieves – Sorry

Pink – What About Us

The War On Drugs – Pain

What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?

When I first moved from Edinburgh to London the first thing I noticed was the amount of opportunities the city offers.

What can we expect to see from you this year?

You can expect another EP and single around autumn time. I’m recording it at the moment and it’s sounding huge. Probably my best to date.

As a new artist on the scene, what advice would you give someone trying to break into your industry?

Leave absolutely no stone unturned. Use anything in your power to make things happen. My first job was a trolley pusher and I used the receipts for writing lyrics round the car park and the hi-vis jacket to sneak backstage at festivals and hand out my demos. Don’t catch yourself standing still.

And finally, what do you stand for?

I stand for having fun and being grateful for every second we have on beautiful planet.
