For our latest mural project Dr. Martens has teamed up with celebrated French Street Artist Akse. Now based in Manchester, Akse is a member of the P19 Crew and specialises in free-hand graffiti portraits. This project takes inspiration from the new ‘Splash Mono’ Collection, and can be seen on Back Turner Street in the Northern Quarter. Share your pictures of the mural with the hashtag #STANDFORSOMETHING

Give us a bit of background about yourself:
I’ve been spray-painting walls for nearly 25 years. I started as a traditional Graffiti artist in the early 1990’s in France. I then moved to Manchester in 1997 and developed as a street artist painting on public spaces with a focus on realistic portraits.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
People inspire me, this is why I’ve been focussing on portraits over the last 10 years.
Talk us through the piece you’ll be creating for Dr.Martens?
The piece was inspired by the design of the boot. The “slime/splash” and “black & white” were strong characteristics so I decided to play around these features, hence the drips and monochrome composition.

What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
My favourite thing about Manchester is the Energy.
And finally, what do you stand for?
I stand for Graffiti/Street Art. Spreading my Art on public spaces for the people to enjoy for free, that’s what I love to do. This is my Life.
