DR. MARTENS SPEAKS TO MATIERE CREATIVE DIRECTOR JAKE ZEITLIN
Dr. Martens boots and shoes have been seen across runways during New York Men’s Collections. We caught up with a few of the exciting designers and creative directors stirring up the fashion industry and asked them about their new lines and their personal relationships with Dr. Martens. Here we spoke to Matiere‘s Creative Director, Jake Zeitlin, about his show.
Tell us about your first pair of Dr. Martens.
My first memory of Docs is related to my older brother who is 12 years older than I am. He was heavily into the punk rock scene and Dr. Martens were his staple brand. The most memorable pair was his blue boots, which we called “The Smurf Killers” due to their color and weight. Being that I looked up to my brother, I always saw Dr. Martens footwear as the epitome of cool. I got a pair of my own as soon as I could, which was the traditional derby style.
Can you tell us a bit about your new looks and why you chose to incorporate Dr Martens into your show?
Our new collection explores a sense of modern migration, updating the traditional traveler with the functionalities to explore today’s world. We explore the duality between the natural and the urban, which is expressed through the use of specialty materials on modern silhouettes. We thought Dr. Martens fit well into this theme. They are an urban footwear staple yet extremely functional; we love the elevated feel of the of the 1461 derby and Arthur boot.
What do you stand for?
Dr. Martens has a strong presence and quality to them; there’s impact. That’s why we relate to them. Matiere stands for individuality and quality and we always want that to come across in our clothing.
