Dr. Martens Collaborates

DR. MARTENS X STAPLE DESIGN

This month we’re (very) excited to join forces with globally-renowned label Staple Design, celebrating 20 years of the famed collective. The resulting shoe fuses the essence of Dr. Martens and Staple together in a covetable spin on our classic 1461 3-eye shoe.

The Dr. Martens x Staple Design 1461 shoe features a soft suede upper, printed with a custom Pigeon Camo – a playful take on traditional army camouflage print. If you look carefully you’ll see this exclusive version is comprised of pigeon silhouettes. To offset the muted grey upper, Staple have added bright pink colourpops and the shoes are completed with our patented Dr. Martens AirWair™ technology for unparalleled comfort and durability.

Ahead of the release of this covetable collab, we caught up with Staple Design head-honcho Jeff Staple to talk inspiration, pigeons and sneaking of to NYC as a kid…

Hey Jeff, we love the pigeon camo on the 1461 shoe, where did the pigeon logo come from?
It’s something we’ve used for over 15 years now, it debuted on a pair of skate shoes that were like the holy-grail for sneakerheads. They were one of the first shoes that people actively lined up on the street for, the first pair to have that kind of hype that’s quite common now. So because of that pair of skate shoes it’s become part of our identity and our fan-base love the pigeon, so we try to incorporate it into all our shoe designs.

How was the design process on the Dr. Martens x Staple Design 1461 shoe?
Well, you know, any collaboration or design we do we swing for the fences and really go wide. When we first went to the Dr. Martens showroom in New York and started pulling styles we had like, 10, then we whittled it down to 5, then 2, there were so many to choose from. We ended up with the classic 1461 and then added the pigeon camo – that’s something we’ve never done before. The process was really fun – a design project is a bit like a sculpture. You keep chipping away and refining until it’s perfect.

Have you always worn Doc’s?
I have a deep, youthful connection to Dr. Martens. When I was a young teen living in Jersey in the early 90s, all the cool kids would go and party in Manhattan. That was the thing to do. So I did it – I’d go to all these clubs like Palladium and The Tunnel. But the thing was, you couldn’t wear sneakers or casual clothes to the clubs back then, you had to dress smart and wear proper shoes. Obviously if you’re dancing for 5 or 6 hours, you don’t want uncomfortable shoes. So I wore Doc’s. Smart enough to get in and comfy enough to dance in.

The act of me sneaking out and going to the city was my act of rebellion and my Dr. Martens were right there with me.

What does style mean to you?
It’s really important, it’s the way you outwardly portray yourself to the world. It’s a way of communicating who you are without having the conversation. Your style is the cover of your book.

What do you stand for?
In this life you either get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’.

  • hi.

i already received my order, the staple dm’s collaboration. when i order this, it says in your website that it comes with a bespoke box as a bonus. i’m wondering if that’s the case then my order didn’t come with the said box.

    thanks

  • i bought my pair locally here in the Philippines. I too am wondering what this “bespoke” box is? i only got a regular box with staple brand marks and the paper covering the shoes are printed with pigeons. is that it?
