IN MY DOC’S: STACEY

Dr. Martens has a rebellious history often associated with free-thinkers, creatives and different subcultures. This is not only true of the Dr. Martens customer, but also our hard-working family of staff. They are our brand ambassadors that embody the DMs way of life. Keep following the blog as we highlight our staff and contributors from across the globe and celebrate their achievements and style.

Meet Stacey, our Marketing Services Senior Creative in our Camden Office. We found out more about her love for vintage & customised fashion, and what she stands for:

Introduce yourself:
My name is Stacey Kemp, but I’m better known as Steaky, SKEMP or Steak Bake. People have always felt the need to call me something other than my actual name! I’m the Senior Creative in the Marketing Team in Camden, London but I originally hail from the Land Of The Long White Cloud.

I’m right into fancy dress – and I’m not talking about the naughty nurse kind! I try to create costumes that are a bit unexpected. I love seeing the reaction I get from people when I’m dressed in something outrageous, but the most fun part is planning and creating the outfit, sourcing or making the individual elements and putting it all together, seeing how it evolves. Leading up to an event I’ll make a dedicated Pinterest board of inspiration and I think that almost excites me more the event itself. My friends get into it too, between us we have a pretty incredible collective dress up box.

I’ve always loved making things, when I don’t have a costume to do I’m usually making accessories from old leather samples we have in the office – festival headdresses, statement earrings – basically anything that takes my fancy at the time. I make to order and I’m currently working on a business idea which will combine my love of costume styling, festivals and design.

What Dr. Martens product are you wearing in your photo?
Medea in soft grey + black, they’re so sassy! Plus they add a good 4 inches to my height which is always a bonus.

Tell us about your first Dr. Martens:
My first pair of DMs were 1461’s, they were the recommended uniform shoe at my high school. We even got away with wearing boots, I remember thinking the girls who had the 1490’s were so cool.

How would you describe your style?
I don’t shop anywhere in particular so my style isn’t particularly consistent. I’d say 50% of my wardrobe is second hand – either from vintage/charity shops or stuff I’ve acquired from friends. We have clothes swap parties, it’s a great way to refresh the wardrobe for free. I like to bring back an old piece from time to time and wear it in a different way, it’s amazing how often people will comment on something I’ve had for several years.

Three tracks you’re listening to right now?
I was lucky enough to see three of my favourite bands at Glastonbury this month, these were the highlights:
1. All My Friends – LCD Soundsystem
2. The Less I know the Better – Tame Impala
3. Can’t Keep Checking My Phone – Unknown Mortal Orchestra

What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
I’ve lived in London for 6 years and they’ve been some of the best of my life. I love my neighbourhood – Lower Clapton, Hackney – I have 6 of my best friends living within 5 minutes walking distance. It’s a rare luxury in London to bump into your mate on the street and a few minutes later you’re going for a run, cooking a meal or having a pint in the pub.

If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would love to spend a day with David Bowie going through his archive of stage costumes, trying them on and hearing about the concept behind them. If I’m ever stuck for inspiration I go straight to my David Bowie Is Inside book from the incredible 2013 V&A exhibition, it never fails me.

What are your top three picks from this season?
The Valentine slingback loafers in black are my go-to pair at the moment, they finish an understated outfit and are really easy to wear.
I’m in love with the Kristina ghillie sandals in black, I love that they’re robust enough to wear to a festival, it’s like walking on clouds.
Finally Hackney canvas high tops in ivory, so fresh and lightweight for summer.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Teleportation would be handy. My family live on the other side of the world so I only get to see them every couple of years, they keep threatening that they’ll be dead next time I see them! My boyfriend lives in Paris and although the Eurostar is pretty quick, it’s not exactly your standard zone 1-2 fare.

And finally, what do you stand for?
I stand for Happiness Now.
We tend to set these ‘conditions of happiness’ like “once I’ve achieved that and when I’ve got this, then I’ll really enjoy life”. Instead of relying on our future selves to bring us happiness, we should be focusing on the great things in our lives right now.
