Here we speak to Terry, from our New Jersey store, about what he stands for and his extensive collection of Docs.
Introduce yourself.
I’m Terry and I am the store manager of one of our newest stores, the New Jersey Outlet. In my spare time, I watch documentaries (of all genres, I’ve pretty much gone through the whole category on Netflix), gardening, video games, and recently, playing with my new dog, Remy.

Tell us about your first pair of Docs.
I’m a relatively new convert, I got my first pair of DM’s four years ago. They’re a pair of 1914s in Black Smooth. I bought them on Black Friday then had the smart idea to break them in during a 12-hour shift working retail – don’t do this. I still have them and they look just as good as when I took them out of the box (thanks Wonder Balsam). My collection is getting pretty serious. I have 23 pairs. I had to dedicate a show rack just for DMs. I wouldn’t be surprised if I hit 50 by this time next year.
How would you describe your style?
I’d say my day to day style is what I’d like to call “grandpa chic”. I’m all about comfort, if I could wear a onesie 24/7, I would. I love capes, shawls, wraps, all of them, because they give me a reason to walk around in a blanket all day. Comfort is why I love my chelsea boots, I own 6 of them 2976 in Black, Cherry, & Navy Suede, Suffolk in Brown & Black, and the Graeme in Brown. I wear my Chelsea’s at least three days a week. They’re so easy to slip on and go.

What’s your favourite thing about living in New Jersey?
Being from Jersey, especially a small town like mine (Montclair, NJ), has its perks. The town I live in has a huge emphasis on diversity. Growing up here definitely helped expand my horizons to see a different perspective. We have great food from all around the world, you can get Japanese, Colombian, Cuban, Ethiopian, all within five minutes of each other. There are plenty of concert venues, art museums, all of it, but without the headaches of living in a large city. It’s definitely the best of both worlds, since the city (NYC) is only a 30-minute train ride away.

What do you stand for?
I stand for determination in the face of adversity. I live by a commitment of being better than I was yesterday. I believe in being my own biggest critic and biggest fan. People tell me that I’m an eternally happy person, I attribute that to my belief that happiness comes from the inside. You’ve got to be at peace with yourself and then you can be at peace with the world. The more you’re motivated by love and joy, the more fearless and free your actions will be.
