INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2021: CELEBRATING WOMEN IN MUSIC.

It’s International Women’s Day. A day we press pause to celebrate and champion women around the world. Women who do incredible things across every industry.
And there’s one industry that we’re particularly close to and passionate about. The music industry. Music has run through our brand DNA for almost as long as we’ve been making DM’s (61 years and counting). But we know that female musicians have long been underrepresented.
We’re committed to bringing you music across all genders, diversities, and music genres. And today is all about women. So we’ve rounded up a list of passionate, fearless female artists.
To amp up the empowerment, we asked the women of DM’s to send us their favourite female artists, to create a playlist, especially for today. But it’s that good, we’re sure it won’t be your only listen. Check it out while you read or head here to save it for later.
NOVA TWINS
Nova Twins are a rock duo rebelling against the norm. At full volume. As well as releasing their debut album in 2020, they’ve been at work on a bigger mission. To shine a light on diversity in the Alternative scene. And to provide recognition to those who deserve it, both on stage and behind the scenes.

To do this, they’ve created Voices For The Unheard, a playlist highlighting the music, art and performances of the most exciting POC talents in the Rock and Alternative scene.

BLIMES AND GAB
Dynamic MC duo Blimes & Gab burst onto the scene with their first single “Come Correct.” The single’s music video quickly went viral, with over 10M+ views. Each with their own acclaimed solo career, Blimes (from San Francisco) and Gab (from Seattle) show their potency as a pair while tossing bars back and forth, creating a dynamic and unique sound. With their fun, powerful music, the two rappers have been making waves with their Blimes & Gab debut album Talk About It, released in June of 2020.

ORION SUN
Multi-instrumentalist Tiffany Majette performs as Orion Sun, and the celestial name mirrors her position as a rising star in the music industry. After losing her childhood home, Majette continued to write music even through her darkest moments and eventually, her music became the path to providing her family with a place to live. Orion Sun’s emotive voice and personal story of resilience create the intimate sound of her album Hold Space for Me.

GEMMA DUNLEAVY
Born and raised in inner-city Dublin in the 90s, Gemma’s work is a tribute to her community and the power of community spirit. A celebration of the Sheriff Street community — an area in Dublin’s northern inner city where Gemma grew up, each song is written from a different perspective of the stereotypes she was raised around.
DM’s caught up with the up-and-coming Irish vocalist about her new EP ‘UP DE FLATS’, staying creative during lockdown and what Dr. Martens means to her, view the interview here.

MADANII
Based in Berlin, MADANII, is an Iranian-German singer, alongside her production partner L:LUCID, blending futuristic synth riffs with booming bass beats and top it off with sounds from the Persian music world. Their mission statement is to push boundaries and rebel. Both in their music and outside it. Just like the DM’s DNA. Who decides what’s normal anyway?
