THE ORIGINALS SERIES: FATIH

We’re celebrating our birthday at Dr. Martens this year by highlighting creative individuals across the world who are originals in their own fields; whether that be art, music, or fashion. Dr. Martens Originals styles have become iconic over time, worn by authentic characters who embody rebellious self-expression. In these interviews, we recognise the creative individuals who inspire us, and find out who they are and what they stand for.

Today we speak to Fatih from Alex Haircuts Barbershop about his trade.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Fatih. Born in Paris and Parisian in soul. I’m passionate about barbering and living an epicurean lifestyle. I’m interested in the arts, and extremely curious and enthusiastic about life.

How did you get into working in a barbershop and what does barbering mean to you?
My childhood of growing up in local barbershops in Turkey has always made me nostalgic about this ‘ancestral’ occupation to this day. I’ve always wanted to have a hands-on profession and I’m happy to be able to perpetuate this craft which is becoming increasingly less common nowadays.

How did start working with Alex haircuts?
I met Alex around 5 years ago, when he was opening his Barbershop in the 9th arrondissement of Paris and I was actually one of his first customers. Since then, our relationship has become very friendly in the true sense of the word. A real friend, and as a colleague we have a profound complicity. We now both specialize in giving retro haircuts and old-school beard trims.

Name a few tracks/artists you can’t get enough?
Music is obviously key in contributing to the general atmosphere of our barbershop. We listen to a lot of Blues, Cajun music, Folk, Rockabilly, Rock, and Garage rock, for example Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House, W. Blind Johnson, Skip James, Robert Johnson and C.W Stoneking & The Delta Bombers.

You’re organizing the second edition of Farm & Village, a festival you organize with Alex. Can you tell us a bit more about this?
The Festival Farm & Village was born from Alex’s passion for the era of the 20’s to the 50’s. The festival was created around an old-school soundtrack from this time period, with the intention of sharing this rich culture with other people, and letting people live this unique experience during a weekend.
next event happening in Drouges, in Brittany, on the 27th and the 28th of May.

If you could trim anyone’s beard, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would have loved to shave the famous Turkish pirate “Barbarossa”… to be a bit more realistic… LeBron James would be a good start.

Tell us about your relationship with Dr. Martens:
I’ve been wearing Dr. Martens since I was 18, for 23 years now. My first pair of Doc’s was the 8-Eye boot, in black. A classic! To me, Dr. Martens has always spread a message full of energy, empowerment with an anti-establishment attitude. The first time I went to Hellfest wa with Dr. Martens two years ago. Thanks for the invitation.
