We caught up with Pretty Vicious, a four piece rock band from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Formed in 2014, this rock band is made up of Brad (Voice & Guitar), Tom (Guitar), Jarvis (bass) and Elliot (Drums). Before the festival season kicks off, Pretty Vicious are playing an intimate gig at the Dr. Martens Cardiff store on Thursday 26th May from 6:30-7pm. Ahead of the gig we find out more about their new EP and what inspires their music:
For those who don’t know Pretty Vicious, how would you sum yourself up in a sentence?
We are a loud rock band who want to bring back loud guitars and put a bit of fun back into the music world.
Can you talk us through the inspiration behind your song ‘Cave Song‘?
Our latest single Cave Song was inspired by all the times we spent drinking shit cider under an old ironworks ‘cave’ with friends. It’s about being youthful and free and enjoying yourself while you’re young, the feeling of having the whole world at your feet and the invincibility of youth.
Tell us about your first Dr. Martens:
Jarvis was the first member of the band to own a pair of Dr. Martens. He has size 11 feet so the boots are insane on him, they’ve lasted years though and have been with him through some hectic gigs.
Three tracks you’re listening to right now:
Drenge- Running Wild.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Lien On Your Dreams
Tame Impala- The Less I Know The Better
What’s your favourite thing about the city you live in?
Our favourite thing about where we’re from is that everyone knows everyone. Ever since the band started taking off no one acted any different towards us and that’s exactly the way we like it. You can walk into a pub and know at least two or three people in there every time, it’s just one of the best bits of living in a small town.
What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the music industry?
For anyone who’s trying to make their way in the music industry, I’d say you’ve got to stand out and stick to your guns. It may take a while but selling out before you’ve even made it isn’t what it’s all about. Having integrity means you write songs that you actually care about, and if you care about the song, others will as well.
And finally, what do you stand for?
We stand for real music and bringing fun back into music.
